Retirement? Huh?
I’m rethinking what “retirement” means for me and I’m realizing it’s not about stopping work, it’s about staying engaged.
My mentor Keith Reinhard , inspired this thinking. He’s 91, and his calendar is packed from arts boards, volunteering at his church, keynotes and lunches with mentees like me. He didn’t retire from advertising to stop thinking. He retired to direct that energy toward what matters most to him. He’s more intellectually alive than people half his age.
That’s the model I want to follow.
And I’ve got 15-20 years to build toward it.
In my next chapter, I’d like to spend more time in New York City….yes, you read that right!
I want to be surrounded by people who are creating; dancers, theater makers, jazz musicians, architects, fashion designers, artists of all kinds. People who wake up energized by their craft, regardless of age or traditional career timelines.
I’m not saying everyone needs or should be in an environment that intense…. But I do like the thought of being in environment that challenges you to keep growing, wherever it might be.
